Superintendents cited road conditions "not improving" in making the switch.
Light freezing rain that began to fall in the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday, Jan. 5 resulted in numerous crashes.
In Westchester County, Rye Schools Superintendent Eric Byrne said, "I had hoped that a two-hour delay would allow for improved conditions, but the roads north and west of Rye are still icy and treacherous and there have been numerous multiple car accidents that have closed local highways."
Crashes were reported on I-87, I-287, I-95, and throughout Westchester County due to the weather, state police said.
A chain-reaction pileup on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle reportedly involved more than a dozen vehicles.
